Siena Palazzo Pubblico

Location:  Siena, Italy

History:  The Palazzo Pubblico (town hall) of Siena is the focal point of its Piazza del Campo, which was structured at the same time as the palace. Construction of the building began in 1297 to serve as the seat of the governing council of the city. The lower story is made of stone and the upper ones of brick. The style is an example of Italian medieval architecture with Gothic influences. The facade of the palace is concave to reflect the curvature of the plaza. The bell tower, Torre del Mangia, was built between 1325 and 1344. It was fitted with a clock during the 14th century. At the lower left hand corner of the building thre is a marble portico into the palace chapel that was added in 1349 as a thanksgiving by the survivors of the plague.
